Check My Eligibility

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income helps eligible people with limited income and resources who are 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability. Eligible children may also receive SSI.

A needs-based program

SSI does not require a qualifying work history. SSA reviews financial circumstances as well as age, blindness, or disability and other eligibility rules.

Income and resources

Income can include money from work and other sources. Resources can include cash and property, though exclusions may apply. A spouse’s or parent’s finances can sometimes affect eligibility.

Disability considerations

For adults applying based on disability, SSA evaluates medical evidence and work limitations. Children have a separate disability standard. People 65 or older do not need to establish a disability to meet the age category.

Other eligibility rules

Residency, citizenship or qualifying noncitizen status, and living arrangements may matter. SSA can explain current financial limits and how exclusions apply to your circumstances.
